Name: Yukina/ 雪菜
Appearance: Yu Yu Hakusho
Variation: Default
Description: Yukina is an Ice Maiden and twin sister of Hiei, although she is unaware of their relation. As a member of a demonic family of winter spirits, she produces beautiful jewels through her tears. When she found out about her brother who was cast from the Ice Kingdom she escaped to the Human World.

Worn at: AnimeNYC 2021.

Why I chose this costume:
Yu Yu Hakusho is one of my favorite animes. I recently reread it and had been watching the Stage Play and felt inspired to cosplay more characters. I actually had been working on the stage play version of Botan first, but Yukina was easier to bring to a convention. I also liked how her wig was translated into a more realistic hairstyle than the super poofy 90’s look, but that’s just a personal preference! Marina Tanoue is so cute as Yukina and everyone in the stage play is really well cast.

Marina Tanoue as Yukina.

Mechanics of the outfit:
Like the stage play, I wanted to keep the costume as authentic as possible and more on the realistic side since that was what I was basing it off. So a lot had to do with learning how to properly wear a kimono and tie an obi (practicing kitsuke, the art of dressing in kimono). I purchase the kimono, obiage, under kimono, tabi socks from Kimono Yukata Market Sakura. The obi, obijime, zori were purchase from Japan Yahoo! Auction. These were all auction bids so I can’t really link a specific shop, but for all the kimono accessories, I bought them from KIMONO WAKU. I did buy winter zori as well, (like the ones she wears when she’s first introduced) but didn’t have time to paint them.

You can get some great deals from bidding and sometimes pay much less for second hand items than purchasing them new. Sometimes the second hand items are new/unworn. The reason I didn’t purchase the kimono accessories via bidding was because there’s specific versions of items I wanted and there are a lot of items used when wearing kimono; it just didn’t feel worthwhile trying to outbid someone on something if I was still going to have to purchase x item elsewhere. If you’re not super picky or just a beginner learning, there a lot of great kitsuke kits you can get for cheaper than purchasing the items individually. I could go into specific in another post if anyone is interested, but it would take too long here lol.

The proxy I used was DEJAPAN. They are super easy to use for the most part, but I found it easiest to go to the actual website you want to search from instead of searching via their website (and just pasting in the specific listing into their website). It’s easier to click specific search criteria (price, category, new arrival/shortest bidding time, etc) via Yahoo! Auction. DEJAPAN’s website has less search criteria you can click and unless you search something specific, it will search everything and you can only look one page at a time. I prefer to open all the pages at once to search so it was easier to look on Yahoo! Auction. Again, I can write a guide if anyone is interested, it’s a lot to explain here.

Just to be clear, I’m not super fluent in Japanese and certainly not all the kanji, but the technology for Google Translate and to translate the website itself has come a long way! If I’m trying to look up a specific anime or word, I’ll just look it up on Wikipedia and change the language to Japanese. #hacks So if you know 0% Japanese, you can still be able to navigate it.

For the undergarment (nagajuban) I sewed the red collar from some fabric I had (that I also used on the hair piece). Although now I think I need another kimono underwear because I…. don’t want to take the collar off now LOL.

Fair warning, putting a kimono is not easy and I had to practice several times to get it correct. For most of it, I followed Kimono-Sunao‘s videos. Most of her videos don’t have English subtitles, but I think you can more or less figure it out from the video? Posting the videos I watched because it can be hard to search if you don’t know Japanese.

Also just wanted to clarify again if you’re buying a costume that’s tailored to fit you, you most likely will not need to do any of these. Kimonos, in general, are larger/longer than the average person, the purpose is that people of different sizes can wear it. So the way it’s tied is to fit the wearer.

Also, before anyone comes for me, I am not claiming to be super experiences or knowledgeable in kitsuke or kimonos. My knowledge comes from what other professionals are posting online.

How to Wear Kimono → She goes in-depth about how to wear the kimono, but may not be helpful if you don’t understand it.
How to Wear Furisode → Or if you’re impatient, you can watch the furisode version, it would just be without the long sleeves. The concept is basically the same.
How to tie Obijime → I used a flat obijime so this was especially helpful
How to tie Obiage → I loosely followed the beginning of this one, because the way she folds it is specific to the design on the obiage, but since mine was solid, it was less important to center the motif.
Troubleshooting undergarment collar → This is tricky LOL Sometimes by the time wear the kimono the undergarment will shift.
Items You’ll Need to Wear Kimono → I more or less used everything in this video, except I didn’t use the obi-makura 帯枕 (obi pillow) (the type of obi I did didn’t require one) and used some elastic versions of the koshi-himo 腰ひも (inner belt) instead of the ties like she shows. I also used a korin belt コーリンベルト for the collar as a personal preference.

Not from Kimono-Sunao, but I made a mistake of buying a Nagoya obi instead of Fukuro obi. Think I was tunnel visioning at this point and didn’t read the auction correctly. Most of them are tied in a taiko musubi (drum knot), the square looking knot, and I wanted a bow because that’s how it was tied in the stage play. But I ended up finding a video from 木ノ花 on YouTube that wasn’t too hard to tie. Though I had to redo it several times to get the tie proportion correct.

Odaiko Ribbon Obi Knot

The wig I purchased off Amazon. I wanted to get one from Arda but they were on backorder at the time and I didn’t want to wait because I was also buying my Botan wig at the same time. I bought the wig from ROLECOS and was surprisingly impressed with the quality. It was very soft and quite thick; I had to even cut some of the volume out when I was doing the ponytail. Even though it said, “Prime,” it was being shipped out of China so it took a few weeks to receive. Maybe Amazon has some in stock now, but the one I purchased took a while. The wig is definitely teal like how they show it, but sometimes flares blue in photos.

I purchased a styrofoam ball for the back ponytail. I didn’t have time to go to the craft store and Walmart only sold it in this size (3.8″) so I shaved a bit off so it was smaller. In hindsight it probably didn’t really matter since it’s not big enough to be seen from the front. This was my first time stubbing a wig and it was terrifying LOL. But I learned a lot and feel a little more confident doing it again next time. I think if I can take the wig apart, I want to redo it. I bought a canvas wig head that was my size, but I made the mistake of not stretching and pinning it to the form while working on the wig, so it ended up being slightly smaller. I made the bangs a little too long so I was able to have the wig sit a bit further back so it wasn’t as noticeable.

I used some of the extra wefts from the ponytail to make into the ahoge and miscellaneous pieces sticking up and secured it with hot glue. I opted for separate pieces because the way the wig was constructed, the mesh/cap underneath could be seen if I tried to just spike it. I used Got 2b Glued hairspray for the ends. I saw a trick on how you can use a hair crimper iron to add volume and I think I will try it when I go back to fix the wig.

For her hair piece, I used some red fabric I had and made some rectangles that rounded into a point at the ends as shown. I added some wire on the inside to the width of the piece. This was so it could curl it to follow the direction of my head. The fabric I used was already on the stiffer side so I didn’t need to add any interfacing or make the wire into the shape of the hair piece. I had the wire on hand, but you want to use a gauge that’s high enough that it will hold it’s shape and not warp. I used a round-nose plier to make a circle at the two ends to secure it and so it couldn’t accidentally poke through the fabric. I didn’t sew the wire end to the fabric because if you make it the same size or even a pinch bigger, it should fit snugly.

Edit: Since writing this post, I ended up going back and redoing her wig, which I highly never recommend. Taking apart the wig after I had hot glued it together was tedious. Fortunately the wig was heat resistant, so I was able to just straighten the ends that looked wonky. It ended up looking way better and should hopefully fit better. Unfortunately you can see some of the glue parts from the previous version, but it’s whatever. I used clear caulk this time with minimal hot glue. I cut the bangs shorter and restyled them. Kids, never take a somewhat styled wig and just toss it in a wig bag LOL. I tried the crimping method on the side pieces and I’m not sure I like them. I think the wig fibers are too silky/soft so it was hard to tease without just combing it all out. Last wig pic is the new one!

Personal Feelings:
Wow, even though the costume was bought pieces, I learned so much about kitsuke and kimonos in general and it was challenge, but so much fun. I had always wanted to own some kimono/furisode growing up but they were always super expensive or I just had other priorities. It was really exciting being able to do it, even in cosplay form. Wig styling has always been challenging for me so I usually just avoid it LOL. But I’m glad I pushed myself to step outside of my comfort zone, even though the wig seems “simple.” It kind of made me realize Yukina is a pretty minor character for the most part. But working on the cosplay and finding all the perfect pieces for her really made me love her more.

Soo my cosplay plans changed a little. I’m still doing Yuna, Ringo, and Miku. I may not do Ciel Phantomhive anymore. I decided not to because Black Butler is still very popular so there will be 9483578495 Kuroshitsuji cosplayers.. I’d rather be one of the few people cosplaying a certain character. It’s more fun that way haha. If there are so many of the same cosplay, unless yours is one of the best of them all, it’ll just be looking at the same thing. So I have 3 new ideas. I also figure that if I go to Otakon next year, I need 3 epic cosplays xD

One is Zhen Ji from Dynasty Warriors 6. She’s one of the few female characters you can actually play in the game. She resides in the Kingdom of Cao, and her husband is Cao Pi. (hehe one of my favorite male characters) She’s one of my favorite female characters. Sun Shang Xiang being my first of course.

Anyways, I was on Skype with one of my friends I met from AnimeNEXT. Somehow we got to the topic of Dynasty Warriors 6. He wanted to cosplay as Cao Pi and I said I’d cosplay as Zhen Ji (I like her outfit anyways ^^).

So we’re going to do that for Otakon 2011, unless my other two cosplays I have planned fall through, then AnimeNEXT 2011!

The next cosplay idea I have is a Sakura one from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I have to finish reading that actually.. But the storyline breaks my heart, even though I partially know what happens in the end, but still! I love the idea of a Sakura x Syaoran storyline.

This one is in the making actually, I’ll most likely have this one for AnimeNEXT as well. I already began making the dress portion of it last night for no reason xD I just wanted to see if I could actually do it.

It’s actually coming out pretty decent actually. It’s long and flowy 😀 The only problem I have is that.. I didn’t use a pattern when I made it. I sort of took a piece of fabric and started snipping and sewing away. Soo.. we’ll see how it comes out in the end! ^^ If it works, I’ll use it, if not, then I won’t.

Last but not least! I wanted to do another cosplay, where the character had sort of a baby face or looked like a child. Mainly because.. I’ll only look
like a 12 year old for so long xDD Don’t worry I’m not that young.. but I get that a lot hahaa, so I figure do all the children looking one before my face matures and I don’t look like that anymore..

So I decided to do a Chii cosplay. I’ve always wanted to cosplay as Chii. There’s one Chii cosplay that I make, it’s my dream cosplay. But! My skill level isn’t there yet.. So I don’t want to make it at the moment. This is her from Tsubasa Chronicles, hence the animal-like ears. I’m probably just going to do her persocom ears.

As sad as it is to say, this is one of her simpler ones xD I love a lot of her other outfits, but they’re lolita-esque, so many of them are poofy, and I don’t really know how to make the cosplay round like that.. And it doesn’t help that I don’t have a dress form either.. D: There is one other one I really want to do, but the way the picture is drawn, it makes no sense.

I really love this one, I like the idea of Chii as a princess, she looks really cute and elegant. But! This would only make sense to me if the opening was in the front, but the way the picture is drawn, it’s open in the back. That and if it were opened that way, you can’t have a petticoat. Without a petticoat, the dress wouldn’t poof. Without a poof, it wouldn’t be much of a princess dress.

If I can figure out how to do this one then I will. ^^ Oh CLAMP.. You and your gravity defying clothing.. >< But yeah.. these are my new cosplay plans.. So I’ll end up having to do.. 6 cosplays next year?? o_O

I’m hoping to finish Yuna before next weekend.. Miku is pretty much done. Ringo is an easy one. Then there’s these three.. xD Zhen Ji will probably be the hardest. Sakura, I pretty much have the base dress done. Chii.. I may just do a circle dress for the one.. Not sure yet..haha

2011, air gear, black butler, ciel phantomhive, cosplay, final fantasy x, hatsune miku, kuroshitsuji, magnet, megurine luka, ringo noyamano, vocaloid, yuna

I’m going to upload my cosplay pictures (that I should’ve uploaded a while ago..) from this year! Did a photoshoot with all three cosplays. Will be doing another Tifa photoshoot in August.. This will seriously be my 5th photoshoot with her.. Hopefully my last xD The idea will get stale if I do it too many times..

I will hopefully be doing a “shipping” photoshoot as Kurama with my friend as Hiei. Then possibly doing a Miku Hatsune x Luka Megurine photoshoot from the song “Magnet” by the program Vocaloids 2. In the process of making the headphones.. which is torture D: I love the way it looks, but cutting out little pieces out of a butterfly wing is tedious.. May do a tutorial on it since someone requested it.

So anyways! My 2011 Cosplay Plan!

Yuna from Final Fantasy X! I’ve wanted to cosplay as her for the longest time. I am absolutely in love with her story (even though I have yet to play the game… Unfortunately I know the basic outline of what happens)

Her story breaks my heart. Ah.. now it seems like I love her character more that I love her outfit.. I still love her outfit hahaa, her story just captivates me even more.

I always thought of myself as a tragic person. Everytime I wrote stories, someone would have to die, or have their heart broken..

There’s other reasons too, but that’s another story for another day..

Anywhoo.. I bought her fabric!! Hopefully working on it this weekend.. Though I doubt I’ll finish the staff by then..

Ciel Phantomhive! I originally wanted to cosplay in his pink ball gown outfit.. But.. since Black Butler is gaining more popularity.. It’s like everyone else in the world is doing it as well.. And I don’t cosplay in the same thing as everyone else xD

I’ll do it one day.. just not now.. So I chose his outfit from the cover of the “Monochrome no Kiss” CD by SID. I’ve only seen one cosplay of this. Just one.

But since it’s a cover album art, they don’t show the whole thing.. So I’m just going to make up the bottom portion. I have an idea of what I want to do. Executing it may be an issue..

Ringo Noyamano from Air Gear. My friend has an Air Gear group and they asked me to be Ringo xD

Hers is relatively simple so it shouldn’t take me that long to make. Though I probably won’t work on it this summer haha.

Finally, Miku Hatsune from Vocaloid 2, with the outfit from the song, “Magnet,” a duet sung with Luka Megurine about forbidden love.

I don’t really like doing super popular cosplays unless I really like the character. I will still do them, but just when the fad is over. For example, I wanted to make a Lightning or Vanille cosplay from Final Fantasy XIII.. But since the game just came out.. 29365792465439 other people are cosplaying as Lightning.. So.. I’ll probably do it in 2012.. or maybe later than that.

But what sparked this one was my friend is cosplaying as Kururu from Air Gear and had a similar pink wig. And I said we should do a Vocaloid cosplay, and this one is probably one of the easier ones. (Too many Miku’s in the world anyways..)

Been making the headphones for this one. Will upload it soon!

So these are my cosplay plans for next year! If I (hopefully) go to Otakon next year, may come up with something else as well xD I have a ton of ideas for cosplays.. Wish I could just make them all xD

A Cosplay Change..

cosplay, final fantasy vii, final fantasy x-2, haku, ideas, naruto, rikku, songstress, tifa lockhart

Changing my last cosplay again.. I was originally going to be Rikku in her songstress dressphere from FFX-2 since my mother REALLY didn’t want me to do her thief dressphere because it’s too revealing.

But! I was looking at the wigs since I need one for her and Kurama.. and.. I realized that.. wigs cost a lot xD And since I’m a perfectionist, I would want it to be a good quality wig. Both those wigs were about $30 each, so about $60 for wigs.. and I don’t have that kind of money..

And I hate using my parent’s money all the time. Certain things I will, like fabric costs, but I can’t make them pay for everything right? Soo.. I’ve decided to sacrifice the Rikku cosplay D; I’ll cosplay as her in the future when I have more money for her wig :]

So.. back to my search for another cosplay! I wanted one that I could just keep my hair color, unless I could find another one with red hair. I suck at thinking of cosplays.. Until I discovered the greatest website in the world..

Anime Character Database.com

This has got to be the greatest website in the world! It’s funny because my roomie and I were talking about how amazing it would be if there was a website where you could just type in eye color, hair color, etc. and it would generate anime characters for you!

AND HERE IT IS!!! Ahh I was so excited hahahaa.

So on this website, you can search up to 3 different eye color, hair color, hair length, age, gender etc. And it’ll generate it for you! You can even set character preferences like if you want the character to be from anime, video games, etc!

I came up with like.. 8-9 possible characters I’d cosplay as. It came down toooo..

So from the top row, left to right! Haku from Naruto, Chen from Touhou Project, Tohru Honda from Fruits Baskets, Xiang Hua from Soul Calibur. Now bottom row! Xiang Hua from Soul Calibur II, Lacrimosa from Lagrima, Seung Mina from Soul Calibur, and Tifa Lockhart from Advent Children!

I really want to cosplay as Tifa when I saw her as a choice. Definitely not her VII version since.. I don’t have.. the “body type” if you know what I mean.. But she has such a womanly face, and my face.. let’s just say sometimes I look younger than I should be xD But she’s sooo pretty!

I love Lacrimosa’s outfit.. I’ve never heard of the .. omg.. OMG.. Never mind I’m not cosplaying as her anymore.. I was confused that I couldn’t google anything on it.. until I looked on the database site and it says that Lagrima is a.. dirty game.. D; Oh my goodness, that was an epic fail. Like I completely just epic failed.

But yeah.. I’ll probably end up being a Soul Calibur character or Tifa. The idea of Haku tempts me because I’ve wanted to cosplay as him for a long time.. xD

When I work on it during the summer I will definitely upload pictures! ^^

I need to begin updating more often.. The school year is almost over! It passed so quickly, only 3 more weeks left, then finals and summer! Haven’t made a tutorial in a while now @___@ I have the horrible habit of picking at my nails. They were nice and long and now they are short again ><

Cosplay Update

I will be going to AnimeNext! And cosplaying of course! I’m not sure if I’ll be getting a table yet, but hopefully I do! ^^ So the cosplay plan is;

  • Friday: Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho, and my friend’s boyfriend will be cosplaying as Hiei.
  • Saturday: Pichu from Pokemon, my roomie and her best friend are Plusle and Minun, my friend and her boyfriend (the same one cosplaying as Hiei) are cosplaying as Raichu and Pikachu respectively.
  • Sunday: This one is up in the air. It’s either Maka from Soul Eater or Rikku from Final Fantasy X-2. Maka is easy to do since I have a similar skirt and Rikku.. I like her hair xD But my mom wasn’t too keen on the idea because she wears a bikini top.

I will be making my own cosplays! Well.. with the help of my mom xD She said it’s practice since I’m going into Fashion Design in the fall. I’m going to use that as an excuse for her to let me cosplay as Rikku.. xD Hopefully, if I can, I want to join the Hall Cosplay Contest. I want to do one for Friday and one for Saturday, but then I can’t use the Maka cosplay since most of the stuff won’t be made..

School Update

I will be attending Philadelphia University next year for fashion design! I’m excited ^^ If I can, I’m going to take classes during the summer at FIT. Hmm.. I think that’s it for this section 😛

Blog Life – Youtube

Ahh slacking off here.. Need to work on this more often!

Hobby Life

So I’ve been working on charms for some time now. Haven’t been working on nail art as much as I’d like to, but ahh school work.. x____x If you want to check out what I’ve made, go to my deviantart! Hopefully I can sell them at conventions. I originally wanted to sell them online, but that’s kind of shaky at the moment.. But if anyone wants a commission, send me a message! ^^
